Taking things for granted....me?

This past weekend I participated in the Groton Road Race. I ran the 10K (6.2 miles) portion of the race. This was not my first 10K and I had no doubts about my ability to complete this run whatsoever. So why do I feel like it was a complete failure? I believe that while this was not my first 10K, I should always treat them like they are. After this weekend, I believe that we should all treat every run like the first one so we don't have moments like this. The weekend was fair and I had a nice 3 mile run on Friday to keep things fresh and loose. Had some folks over for some drinks and food, but even that was a better version of what have been in the past. No, I can say that the days leading up to the race were fair with respect to what I ate. Sunday morning I wake up with some time to relax and enjoy the morning. "Let's make breakfast" - was a great idea! Bacon and Eggs, with some toast, coffee. Nice. I had about 5 hours until the run so I hydrated and had so...

Looking back a year...and looking forward to this year

This weekend I will run in the Groton Road Race (10K). Looking forward to this run as I did not have a chance to run this last year. Thinking back over the last year, and looking at what I have in my plans for this year I cannot help but think of the past year as a time of recovery and preparation for what I am about to take on. In February of 2010, I had a reduction mammoplasty (otherwise known as a breast reduction). I had to take it very slow and basically had to start all over again on a walk-to-run program. As frustrating as it was at the time (I had been up to 7-8 miles pre-surgery) I knew that I would get back to where I was and also be pain free so I could accomplish my first goal - a half marathon. So this weekend's plan include the Groton Road Race and I couldn't be more pleased to be almost back to where I was. Things are fairly busy moving forward - a few local 5K's and then I fly off to Colorado to run in the Bolder Boulder (10K) which should be very cool ...

Springtime...

This morning I decided to take a few extra minutes from my morning routine and head out for a run. This weekend I run a 10K in a local community but I didn't want that to be my only workout this weekend. It was great to be out there! It felt like my own personal "Opening Day" on a morning run. Last Winter I had purchased a number of cold weather/snow/ice running items so that I could be sure to get in at least one outdoor run every week. This Winter, however, it was downright dangerous to be out there. The snow piles were so high and the sidewalks unable to be declared safe for a runner. I had to stick to the treadmill (ugh). Now don't get me wrong, I have been outside running, but only regularly over the past month and mostly on weekends; maybe an evening that I could sneak one it. Nothing quite compares to a morning run. Watching the sun rise over the pond in my neighborhood and witnessing all of the sights and sounds of people starting their day - all the wh...
