Taking things for granted....me?
This past weekend I participated in the Groton Road Race. I ran the 10K (6.2 miles) portion of the race. This was not my first 10K and I had no doubts about my ability to complete this run whatsoever.
So why do I feel like it was a complete failure?
I believe that while this was not my first 10K, I should always treat them like they are. After this weekend, I believe that we should all treat every run like the first one so we don't have moments like this.
The weekend was fair and I had a nice 3 mile run on Friday to keep things fresh and loose. Had some folks over for some drinks and food, but even that was a better version of what have been in the past. No, I can say that the days leading up to the race were fair with respect to what I ate.
Sunday morning I wake up with some time to relax and enjoy the morning. "Let's make breakfast" - was a great idea! Bacon and Eggs, with some toast, coffee. Nice. I had about 5 hours until the run so I hydrated and had some granola snacks before hand.
Fast forward to race time. At around mile 4 - all I could feel (and taste, sorry) was bacon. ugh. The hills that this run offered, my body didn't receive as well as it could have if I had properly filled up the 'tank' with what it needed.
While we finished the run, it was not a proud moment for me. I was upset with myself for taking this run for granted and not treating my body as I know I should.
If you put crap gas in a car, it will run poorly. If you put crap food in your tummy before you run, it will also run poorly.
Lesson learned folks, lesson learned.
