Finishing school.....20 years later.
Registered for classes to start on August 25, 2014 - new degree declared in Marketing - it's go time.
When I graduated from Beacon High School in 1991 (go Bulldogs!) I went into a small, private business school and got a quick Certificate in Business and moved to Boston. My plan was to move to Boston, get a job and register for school part time at a Community or State College...I was on my way!
That was over 20 years ago.
The move to Boston was great, I got jobs doing office temp work locally and was happy to get a permanent job at the local paper writing legal ads. I registered at Middlesex Community College (Environmental Technology Degree Program) and I was on my way!
At one point, I even scored a killer job working in local public health that gave me the experience and education in order to pursue a career in environmental and public health - I was going to change the world!!!!
Life had other plans for me.
Shortly after I registered for school - Rick and I were engaged to be married. As a married couple, I continued to take classes at the school in the evenings, and things were moving along.
Within six month of being married - Rick got sick; my plans of going to school at night changed to taking one of the first online classes that the school had ever hosted (I was a pioneer!). As his treatments progressed, we found out that I was pregnant.....another change.
(there is a very sad story in this area, a story for another time) - Let's skip ahead.
Widowed and a single mother at 24, I had to take some time off in order to try and make sense of what happened to me. I was young and scared to death - one minute I was starting my life and family - the next I had nothing. School was no longer a priority - my baby (Abbey) was.
As a few years passed (by few I mean 5-7 years), I started to take one or two classes at the Community College again - online classes. It was ridiculously hard. Working full time, full time mom and student wasn't going to work. I had to take it down a bit and take one class every semester - I received my Associates Degree in 2007 - 10 years after I started.... and I've been continuing toward my bachelors degree since then... which seems like forever.
At this time in my life, it's important for me to finish - not just to get the degree - but to show my daughter (who is no longer a baby anymore) that she can do anything that she sets her mind to.
If my math is correct (and I believe it is) I will have my BS in Marketing in one year from this month.
.....oh....and I WILL walk across a stage and graduate....you bet your ass I will.
