Reflections on a 5K.....

Tomorrow - May 15, 2011, I will run in the Janis Bresnihan 5K Run for Education in my Town (Ayer, MA). This will be the fourth year that I have run in this event.

The run is quite nice and is well staffed and organized (two water stops and lots of folks cheering along the way!). It ends with a nice lunch served (burgers and hot dogs) along with plenty of post race comradery.

This morning, while eating my oatmeal, I was thinking back on this run and what it has meant to me personally as a runner (see, I called myself a runner).

While I could sit here and talk about getting a PR on this route after so many years, my thoughts go back over the years on my personal performance. When I first ran in this event, I barely finished (the last mile is entirely uphill - yes, uphill.

There was the year where I didn't finish it at all - I stopped at my house (the run goes by my house, a little too convenient when the "I can't" crept in on me). My husband gave me a ride back up to the finish line as I sat in disappointment of myself.

This year - I'm just going for a run. this course is part of my normal route of running when I hit the neighborhood - I take that hill on like it's nothing now (but never forget it's a hill). Very often this stretch of road included in the 5K is now only part of a run that I do when I am out on a longer run of 7-8 miles.

A friend from the gym asked me to run the route with her this week as she is attempting this run for the first time. She asked me to run it with her - how cool is that? Me. Run it with her to 'teach' her to course so she would have a better mental picture on race day. It is often said that I inspire people - truth is that people inspire me when they take on their first 5K.

Now don't get me wrong, this isn't 'cocky' that I am projecting - this is a message to anyone who thinks that they "can't" do this run. You can, and maybe some day you will.

...and if you want me to run it with you - just ask :)

Good luck tomorrow to everyone - rain or shine - it's a run and it's for a great cause.
